Hanging a 900 lb swing bed from (2) 2x8 porch joists?
Hi! Is there a weight formula or a reinforcement method to use for hanging about 900 pounds (weight includes full size wood swing bed I built, 2 adults, mattress weighing 103 pounds, 4 heavy chains) from 2 of my 2x8 porch joists that are 8 feet in length? The beam at the outer edge of the porch has 4x6 posts every 24 inches supporting it, no problem there. BUT also concerned about point where joists join the house and possibly needing reinforcing (straps or ledger). Would a second joist attached to each be enough reinforcement? I am lost and do not want to be sleeping with the roof caving in on me but cannot wait to "camp out" on my bug free porch! Stargazing Zone!

well I will recommend to put to legs supports in each post that you going to hang the bed in direction of the swing legs mean 4x6x20 left and right of each near post where hanging and after that check for any cracking noise for safety
I would reinforce everything. Double the joists. put metal hangers on all of it. As for where it meets to the house, I would put a couple of lag bolts on each side of the joists and make sure they hit something solid.

Happy camping
You might want to get a professional opinion on this. 900 pounds is an awful lot of weight to be hanging from two 8 foot 2x8's. You might do some structural damage. You might have to reinforce the 2x8 joists with additional support.
